there are articles, the root user is no longer available as standard setting
during the installation you create a user with a given password.

if you want to execute commands with root rights you have to use the sudo command.

if you really want the root user and want to login with / as root:

at first set the password for root:

    sudo passwd root

You will be asked for your User password (that You have given during the installation process)
than you will be asked to set the password for root - and confirm that password

next step is to install the root login:

    sudo apt install kali-root-login

for most work you do not need the root user, everything you need you can do with your standard user,
but for some work, the root user is better .
my experience - installing a printer (hp-setup) does not work proper by using sudo
under the user root it works fine

    https://linuxhint.com/reset_password_kali_linux_2020/

After set new password use root as username
