Can I use the 2.9gig kali live iso in a vm?

I want to download the version I can use both in a vm and as a live usb,

What is the difference between the live and the installer version I notice a substantial difference in size, does one come with more or less?

Yes, of course you can use it.
The difference is that the smaller one installs the essentials and then the rest and the other version installs everything instantly.
