Missing apllications

Hello!
I recently installed Kali linux onto my old laptop, and the installation went well. But after the installation, the applications were no where in sight. I can not even see the terminal, and the only few thing on this installation is help, settings and user input. Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this?

Did you make a backup? Did you install into separate partitions or did you overlay your old partitions? Have you searched your file system to see if the things you wanted to save are there?

Most installations wipe your old stuff out.
