(Opinion) Kali support seems to be lacking

Yes that's right, it may be an unpopular opinion but the technical support side of Kali seems to be lacking.

I have formed this opinion from having posts in the troubleshooting section and they go weeks to forever without being replied to even once!

I have observed that I am not the only one with posts not being answered. If you a casual viewer of this thread take a look at the troubleshooting section, you will see pretty much the entire front page of posts have 0 replies.

This is only an opinion and if you disagree that is fine. This is simply feedback from a community member.

What do you suggest to get the number of questions answered,

Ban all users who do not answer at least 10 questions a week.
Maybe stop paying the mods lavish sums of money if they don't answer at least 100 questions a day

Well what I suggest is that the developers take some time away from developing new things in order to establish a strong base of what does actually work.

The more new users that come along and use Kali and feel that their installation concerns are being heard, the bigger the community gets.

I get that Kali is more focused towards "advanced" users, but even the advanced users need help because something new, broke many things that were working.

take for instance how Ubuntu 22.04 has kernel support for Nvidia 340.108 but Kali 2022.04 does not.

Kali uses a kernel named 5.16.0-kali7-amd64
Ubuntu uses a kernel named 5.15.0-39-generic

I get that there is probably more involved with just the Kernel version number, but speaking entirely for KALI a minor revision from .15 to .16 breaking major compatibility with GRAPHICS DRIVERS is really insane.

If WINDOWS broke something like a GRAPHICS DRIVERS with one of their "updates" they would immediately backpedal that release and fix what broke that one thing.

It's a reason why windows / mac is in use by so many more users than "Linux".

    SUPPORT.

The reason why Ubuntu is used by more people than any other distro... SUPPORT.

The mantra of "nobody is using that device anymore anyway" is certainly not the "Way of the Linux" from my viewpoint. Linux is supposed to "resurrect old devices" with SUPPORT.

Seriously. I'm not trying to start a fire here, but if Kali want's to become a serious option for people, the developers behind it, need to establish a strong foundation! with SUPPORT.

Kali is supplied to you free of charge and you can change it to your liking if you want something it doesn't have, including adding any graphics drivers you feel are missing.

Many of the 'questions' I see can be answered with a simple web search and a bit of reading. The Kali documentation itself is good, and the programs it contains have got their own web sites or github pages with clear instructions on how to use them.

If you are having problems setting up your hardware to use with Kali, and can't sort it yourself with some time reading, then the more advanced aspects of hacking and penetration testing are going to be extremely difficult to grasp.

Kali isn't aiming for 'massive market share', its not even designed to be a daily driver, it is a very specialist distribution for a very specific role.

So basically your response is "its freeware what do you expect?" and "if you can't recompile the entire Kali kernel yourself you have no business learning ethical hacking!"

    Right.

Also, FYI, I wouldn't be posting on a forum if reading for the solution was the solution. Being someone that relies on others for help has never been me.

Also, I'm clearly wasting my time with Kali. On to other things.

No, not at all.. As you yourself have already pointed out, if you want a general Linux distribution you could use Ubuntu or any number of other, 'better suited to that task' Linux distributions.

Kali is not, nor ever was, conceived to be a general computing platform for everyday use. As it is, like Ubuntu, a Debian based distro, you could of course install Ubuntu and just add any Kali packages you wanted on top of it.

The main reason that Kali is not a daily driver is because when it was compiled certain decisions and kernel flags are used that enable drivers to use functionality like wireless monitor mode etc, but actually can also then open up the system to being exploited, i.e. it is designed to be quite open so that it can be a powerful tool for penetration testing, not a secure everyday computing platform.

Another issue, not just for Kali but for many Linux distros is that companies like Nvidia use closed source binaries for their drivers, so to use them you just have to 'accept the binary blobs' they need to be installed to work are free from any problems or malicious intent. They are not 'free software' in any sense of the word.

Ethical hacking is not about the platform you are using, configured correctly even a Windows box can be used for such purposes.

The power of a Linux based system is precisely because if it doesn't do what you need, you can build it to suit your purpose, and yes, in many cases that can include compiling a kernel, or at the very least installing and setting up kernel extensions.

    And the Kali documentation actually walks you through installing Nvidia;

If reading the official documentation or any other means of using Google or reading any FAQ was the solution, I would not be on the forum asking questions to begin with.

The official drivers stop at 390.xx and I need 340.xx.

Oh, I thought it was because they were inept at using the command line.

See the screenshot here of my Win7 era Lenovo Thinkpad T61running Kali 2022.2 or my IBM Thinkpad T43 running same in other forums.

I won't hold your hand or do your homework.

I've been promoting Kali Linux at several Linux forums as a general purpose desktop OS the last year.
