Fern WIFI Cracker finds too many APs.

Fern WIFI Cracker will show hundreds, sometimes thousands of APs detected. When I open the attack panel, there are about 40, the right amount for my area. What is it finding? That number will sometimes continue to rise.
It then takes hours to settle on an AP for me to test. I'm trying it on a linksys with default name and password, just as a test.
I am using Kali inside of Virtualbox and connected with a AWUS1900 Realtek RTL8814AU USB adapter.
The command airodump-ng wlan0mon shows 39 APs, all with WPA2. That's the same I see in Windows 11.
