    usually related to pulse audio and it not talking to ALSA in most cases.
    Install pulse audio volume control, that should allow easy config;

    sudo apt install pavucontrol

    Open a terminal and first install ALSA utilities, and then run the set up;

    sudo
    apt install alsa-utils

    alsamixer

    you will then get a menu to select devices for ALSA that should allow you to choose the correct input.

    you may need to reboot after setting ALSA for pulse audio to pick it up.
