Cannot update root user password in kali linux virtual machine

What have you tried: I have tried to update the password in terminal

What is the error:Password will not update

What device is this on: MSI Trident 3 12 gen windows 10 virtual box

I am trying to follow a tutorial but i cannot update my root user password. I am trying to install kali linux into google cloud then boot it from wherever i am. The tutorial isn’t very good and instructions are vague. Can you set a root user password to toor? Or is that prohibited?

If your using a virtual image (an .ova for example) what you are seeing is expected behaviour, its a ‘fixed’ image, if you want full control, you have to install the OS as if you were doing so on real hardware from an ISO image, not using a pre-built config.

.ova files by their nature are designed to be exactly the same every time the instance is booted up.

VMware Workstation (or Fusion if your on a Mac) is now free for individuals;

Download a copy, create a VM by installing Kali using your required username and password, update it and install any extra packages you want to be able to use etc, and then shut it down and you can then export your VM to an .ova or .ovf file format to upload to the cloud.

Thank you for replying to me, i really appreciate it :smiley: Merry Christmas and Happy Thanks giving to you or Happy Holidays to you.

Yes that makes, sense what your saying, I will just leave it alone then. I thought it was a glitch or something.

Same goes for local host password or SSH setup password correct? I setup root during installation so i don’t even know why they suggest in the tutorial to change it.

Happy Ethical Hacking to you my friend. Im trying to boot an os from google cloud in Tizen, then mount the file system then hopefully i can root it. Its just an old smart tv.

Thanks again

what? No it’s not. You can change anything you want with the prebuilt vm images.
