CUPS Package missing on Kali Linux 2025.1

What have you tried:
sudo apt install cups
What is the error:
Package cups is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source

Error: Package ‘cups’ has no installation candidate

What device is this on:
Dell Latitude E5530 bare metal

i’m not getting the same error here. try apt search cups and install the package that you need

Can not reproduce your problem here

Can you post your /etc/apt/sources.d/ files?

You are maybe missing an important repository.

Yeah, ignore that. Apt policy cups shows it’s coming from main, so if you didnt have that repo, you’d pretty much not have anything else.

Although, can you post the output of

apt policy

Just in case it’s been disabled or something.

I’m a newbie to Kali. I have been playing with sources.list file because nothing is showing up under the Explore tab in gnome-software. Attached is my apt policy output as well as the sources.list contents. I am trying to upload the images but I keep getting an error after upload

Image upload is currently disabled, just post the text like I did here.

I can’t attach the whole output of apt policy because the system is telling me that new users can only post 2 links and there are more than 2

apt policy hcxtools has only one link though

“Unable to locate package hcxtools”. I tried to install hcxtools and it cannot find that package

You did a sudo apt update before, I assume?

Can you post a repository line for sources.list where the cups package would definitely be located? I can append my sources.list and maybe that will fix it.

I ran sudo apt update multiple times

Is it possible that cups is not available in the 2025.1 version? If I go to the Kali Linux Package Tracker website and search for ‘cups’, the latest version is dated 10/07/24.

You can check the package tracker - version 2.4.10-2 has been added 10/07/24 and has not been removed since.

So that version of cups will install in Kali 2025.1? Also, is it possible to view cups in the repository by navigating the file system on website?

This version will install in any version of Kali, that is installing from the repository.

Lets stop with the nonsensical questions for a moment, and actually show us the output of sudo apt update and apt policy cups

Just post the text you get, each should only include one link

Use a pastebin site, if necessary

Not really nonsensical in my viewpoint. Ignorant maybe. I told you I was newbie.

All packages are up to date.

I only included last 2 links of sudo apt update return
