So I had just put kali on a live boot usb drive. I had edited the settings for the display since I have it displaying on a bigger monitor. So I changes the settings to show everything on the monitor. Then I went thorough and added persistence on the drive. Restarted and boom it works saves things and stuff. But all the changes I did before where gone. So I went to go change the settings and the display settings window will open but not load anything, just blank. I had made a file before I restarted but it was gone once I restarted so I made a new one then restarted and it stayed.
that’s how persistence works. if you did anything before setting up persistence then it will be erased during the next boot.
