Well, I am quite curious to know how Kali Linux developers make a living. From my assumption, Kali has a relatively small user base, so donations are likely rare, and donations alone can’t sustain anyone. Are the developers security engineers, kernel compilers (for company), or do they work freelance and pursue other work in real life? Also, Developing or working on a distro is no small feat—it requires a significant amount of time and effort. So I mean how they manage to do all the stuff.
Answer from a Kali Linux dev would be much appreciated
Are you offering to fund them? This is a highly inappropriate question in a general sense. In any case, Kali is developed by offsec (https://www.offsec.com) and the devs are employed there.
Well, my form of saying might sound rude. I am sorry about that. I was curious about how does they make a living. So the question was kinda like "the lifestyle of a open-source dev "
I have respect from very bottom of heart for the open-source devs who working hard for just for the users out of there passion.
Thank you.
Fair enough. Happy to have been able to answer your question.
We are willing to provide financial support to Kali developers.
Hi. I guess the original question of @sky was a simple: I wonder how they can maintain such a great tool with a niche of users and little to no donations
, and frankly speaking “apart from how the original question might have sounded or seemed rude”, it is a good question.
We know that very very few people would do anything for free, and Kali is a Manna from the sky for security experts, hackers, and penetration testers, hence the question: If Kali is developed as a completely free tool for a limited set of audience with zero to no donations, then how would the developers sustain their daily life?
Thanks
Yep, the question was understood and answered. Thank you though!
