Kali is designed to be run as root.
Not sure if your BIOS is updated or not, here's an interesting thread:

From the command line, the msfupdate updates the framework.
The NHR seems to have all sorts of issues. The NHA card sounds good and I think it is the latest of the Alfa cards. The H is older and well-supported. I have an NH and it works fine for me...
When I've seen that, it's been from an incomplete or corrupted download. Definitely check the sha1sum.
You're probably better off creating a new thread in the installing section. Even without laptop mode enabled, my Thinkpads have the battery monitor in the taskbar by default, and by default it shows...
Penteter Lab has some good tutorials and vulnerable systems at https://www.pentesterlab.com/
Vulnhub has some vulnerable systems at http://vulnhub.com/
both are good resources for Web...
Ignore this "advice." Kali runs fine in Virtual Box. I've got three instances running on two machines at the moment and it functions fine. I'd give it both more disk space and more memory though,...
You got a bad download:
# sha1sum kali-linux-1.0.3-amd64.iso

I had issues with two VirtualBox VMs on two separate laptops repeatedly crashing when doing heavy OpenVAS scanning using NAT for the VM interfaces. Changing the interfaces to pass-through solved the...
Needed an openvsmd --rebuild followed by openvas-setup then everything worked- thanks so much for your help!
FYI: openvas-check-setup probably needs a --v5 at the end above too, unless your version is older than mine
I changed my sources.list to try to reinstall from CD, probably the issue.
doing openvas-scapdata-sync now, it's slow...
check-setup gave me:
Error: no such table: meta
ERROR: Could not determine database revision, database corrupt or in invalid format.
FIX: Delete database at...
I just re-ran this after adding the lib and gsd to the downloads and now the original openvas-setup script runs but openvas manager is grumpy about its database versions:
md ...
I had to add http://repo.kali.org/kali/pool/main/libo/libopenvas/libopenvas5_5.0.4-1kali0_amd64.deb
It's still not totally happy with the stuff in init.d to run the setup, but I can at least start...
I understand basic hash calculations probably better than you do. I edited it because my original post said the hash values were the same for each download, and that was incorrect- and that's...
The Kali torrent file shows version 1.0.2 in the file name, but the current ISO is 1.0.3. My torrent download has a different sha1 and doesn't seem to work correctly.
Edit: Mistake, the sha1 is...
I have the package nuked, the problem is that the only version that shows up is the broken one- there's no way to go back to the base version as far as I can tell when using the repositories listed...
Yes, I can't build- kali-linux-full won't install. It seems the last update broke a lot, and I've been trying to get to a point where I can downgrade the broken OpenVAS packages. So far no success...
The only version shown is the new broken one, 1.1. Any other value for version gets an error that the version wasn't found.
sanscore: That's my experience too.
reaper: Using what input to apt-get? I can't seem to figure out how to get the old version back on...
I tried that, but the only version seen is the new version, and the new version won't install because of gsd version incompatibiliies.
Is there an easy way in Debian to roll a package version back to the CD version? With OpenVAS broken by the last update, I just need to get my system functional again.
I also did an update today and had OpenVAS disappear from the Kali menu. In addition, openvas-nvt-sync wasn't happy and wanted to migrate my configuration. After that, I got a segfault in...
