Sound like you forgot to put your interface card in monitor mode (mon0) - try that. "airmon-ng start wlan0" then kill the remaining processes like the network manager etc etc etc! - wash and...

i just used this
apt-get install x11-xserver-utils
Now open up your ~/.xinitrc file (if you don't have one then create it) and enter this:
xset s off # don't activate screensaver...
If you go to Applications / System Tools / and find the dconf Editor - - you can use it to turn on the buttons in your panels, as well as showing hidden files (permanently) in nautilus etc etc etc.
I too created the missing /etc/reaver and its working fantastic. Thanks to whomever discovered this simple fix.
