Booting Kali from Usb

Okay so I downloaded an iso image of Kali. Bear with me im relatively new to this. It boots fine. But i come to the partitioning screen. I dont know if this is possible but can partition the flash to have the os and store any files or work i do while booted to it? I am trying to preserve the os already on the pc. Thanks for any help/tips.

read up on installing kali with persistence, the docs on the main kali site are quite thorough on how to achieve this.

personally, I use 2 USB drives, one with the ISO on it and another that I will then partition and use for a fully bootable install, that will act like any other hard drive, if you go that root, make sure you create a boot partition on the USB and install grub to it, then it will behave as you would expect any other OS installed on hardware (speed can be limited on some devices, or on some computers, depends on the hardware/USB device)

Thanks Fred for your quick response, let me make sure I understand. The flash with the iso, do you have to use it every time to boot or just the first time while you setup the other flash? Oh and merry christmas

As Fred says - read up on kali live usb with persistence.

The version with using two usb drives is not necessary, just something he does.
