Could not install any software on install

Hi,

For some reason, I could not install any software on install of Kali linux.

Now I can log in and I have access to the command line. This could be a good start anyway, except that I’ve tried to install KDE with a sudo apt update followed by sudo apt install kali-desktop-kde with no success. Apparently, the system does not find any file!

Is it possible that I have no connection? I did not miss the step on install. Hard to believe then, but I am lost :frowning:

Just to rule out the obvious; you do have internet connection?

Don’t leave people guessing about the output you get from that commands - respect people’s time they volunteer to help.

Also, it might help to add some details around the installation.
Is it bare metal (only OS on that machine), dual boot, virtual machine (VBox, VMware…)?
How did you install it? Common problems arise after use of Rufus, Balena Etcher is recommended, so any input like that might give a clue

Well actually this is the question at this stage, but I don’t know how to check that from the command line.

Hi Kartable,

two things

    • $ hostnamectl status

2.- $ sudo apt search kali-desktop-kde

Please, share the results

You are right and I am sorry I could not remind me of the exact output. The system could not find the requested files. I double checked about typos…

Personally I usually just try to ping someone, like 8.8.8.8 for example. See if any traffic goes in and out

This was the right thing to do. I’ve tried with

Ping google.com

And the answer is

échec temporaire dans la résolution du nom

Clearly I have no connection!

Great, that’s progress
Am I translating this right, problems with name resolution?

Are you on a virtual machine, or is Kali your machine’s main OS?

I have a connection problem, but you are right asking for details as there is another problem which I thought was solved: on several attempts to log in, I am stuck with a

Loading initial ramdisk

I initially installed Kali Linux for a dual boot, but I had an UEFI issue which I solved with EasyUEFI. And after checking in the docs, I realised that I should have installed Kali from a Live version of the iso file. So that’s what I’ll do now.

Where did you see that? For installing you’d use the installer iso, that’s the most natural option. You can also use the live image if you want.
