Kali Linux as a Virtual Machine

What have you tried:Nothing yet

What is the error:Nothing

Since I have little experience using Kali as a VM, I’m curious about the type of Kali I download to use as a VM. I successfully set up several VMs in Virtual Box - using the Virtual Box download from the site.

Main question is I have an older version of Kali - it’s just a straight install program, not specifically for a VM. Will it work to insert that older Kali program - 2021.3 version - as a VM or will it crash?

I searched for an answer for this and didn’t find any topics related so I thought I would see if anyone else knows if I can use the stand alone Kali that is not specifically for a VM.

What device is this on:

I guess it might be best to be more specific. Can I install an installer image into Virtual Box as a VM? Or do I have to use the Pre-Built Virtual Machine download?

You can use a premade VM if you want to, personally I always install the OS from a Live ISO or installer image, as I have full control over every aspect then.

Don’t use your old 2021 image though, you will have problems updating it, its now to old as Kali is a rolling distro.

Download a new ISO image and install from there.

Thanks for the reply. I will try to use the ISO image directly into Virtual Box, because I like the older version I have. I don’t need to update it for my uses though, so I won’t have an issue with it since I don’t need to update it. I like that particular version as I have been using it for years on a computer that it is not run as a VM.
Thanks again
