I feel compelled to ask; if the first installation already proved to be somewhat tricky, why immediately jump to the next device, involving a very different process?
If you are trying to learn about the use of Kali (or Linux, or InfoSec, or whatever the motivation), perhaps play around with that VM first. There’s plenty of material out there for every level of prior knowledge.
A running VM is a good starting point
