Minimize, maximize and close buttons gone

What have you tried: Installed Kali in 3 computers, after last update problems started so I searched for solutions but nothing worked. Release 2024.3

What is the error: Minimize, maximize and close buttons many times are not showing on the right hand corner of every window. Other errors like typing showing on a window that is not on front (not active).

I am not using any virtual machine.

Quite a lot of people got that problem, when they did not follow the documentation on upgrading.

sudo apt full-upgrade

not

sudo apt upgrade

Thanks for your reply, I was about to post that yesterday I did that full-upgrade and now the system does not even get to the GUI login screen. I tried nomodeset with no success. Any suggestions please?

Well without knowing what the problem actually is this is not the time for suggestions, but for analysis.
Can you switch to a different tty, log in and look at the log files?

It may be necessary to start with a lower kernel from the grub splash screen.

Did the full-upgrade finish without an error?

It doesn’t allow me to post much here because I am new: I pressed CTRL+ALT+F2 then: sudo journalctl -ksome findings:ACPI bios er - Pastebin.com

does this at the end of your pastebin…

After reboot I see many ACPI error AE_not found but the GUI loaded fine.

mean your sorted now?

Yes but I am still worried about the errors showing up

Only the apt update && apt full-upgrade -y It doesn’t fix it.

  • but it will install some additional packages.

Use - rm -r .config .cache .local

  • reboot a couple of times, sometimes it might not boot up and end up in initramfs, just type help, and force shutdown
  • on next reboot, it should boot properly.

Some taskbar icons will be gone, but the system seems stable and reboot sustains the user settings like wallpaper, desktop files etc.

Not sure if you noticed in the replies of this thread, but the original problem was already resolved.

I wouldn’t suggest to blindly delete files without having looked at the log files and narrowed down what the issue is. And sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade -y is the recommended way to update anyway… always… has been for years.

Hey, thank you, actually the problem was making the machine unusable thus this drastic measure…still people, please backup your data before doing recursive deleting…

Thanks to all the people who helped resolving the problem. I guess I need to open a new thread for the ACPI errors

you are using lightdm use gnome

I don’t want to use anything else than xcfe, I need it to be light and easy on resources

Best if you stick to a VM instead. Quick glance at your attached ACPI errors says you’re likely to run into issues with your current hardware.

ACPI errors are not easy to fix, and you’ll have to rely on the manufacturer to get firmware updates. Spoiler alert though: that’s not always gonna be dandy—if they don’t explicitly announce support for Linux, chances are they won’t do much (if anything at all) about it.
