Problems writing # symbol in gedit

Hi there,

I’ve freshly downloaded and installed Kali from kali.org so it’s latest Rolling 2024.4 on VMware Fusion inside Macbook macos sequoia. Unfortunately I’m not able to type the hash symbol in gedit pressing Shift + 3 or option +3 as i did in my Mac.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me solve this problem.

counter intuitively… most linux distros are set up on windows keys layouts, so on your macbook, hold down the right option key (the left will be default alternate choice which of course will be a currency) the right option will give you the second alternate, i.e. your # as your expecting

Thank you Fred, appreciate your respond.
Unfortunately, holding down right option key (Kali) give power 3 (English UK layout) and Mac reliably does not matter left or right give #.
Not trying to be funny but I wrote above “power 3” because I’m having trouble typing superscripts on my Mac keyboard.
and this I copied and pasted from Google Gemini to better explain what I mean writing power 3.
Hope to hear from you again, and I didn’t bore you by describing incomprehensibly.

You need to change your vmware settings to ‘Mac OS keyboard’ I use mac with UK keyboard too, and that works for me with all Linux distros, including Kali.

Thank you Fred,
Right option key + 3 give 3³. Kali restarted too. Greedings.

There you go, # has been found under slash backward key in Kali.

I note you didn’t click the ‘make default’ option at the bottom of the window, I did highlight this in my screenshot…
Glad you’ve found an alternate key for it though :grinning:
